Stardew Valley update: What's new in the latest patch

Stardew Valley update: What's new in the latest patch

Stardew Valley is all about patience, which keeps paying off when developer ConcernedApe releases huge new Stardew Valley updates almost yearly. Since the game launched in 2016, Stardew Valley's wholesome farming and relaxed town life has wedged itself in everyone's hearts. Even though it's been years since Stardew's launch, ConcernedApe has still been gently tending to his game, adding bulky updates and bug fixes to the base game.

Stardew Valley fans have been treated to a number of updates over the years, including Stardew Valley's multiplayer farming, four new farm maps, and the incredible 1.4 "Everything Update" that tweaked almost every feature of the game. The latest addition is the 1.5 update which doesn't seem to have an official title but way as well be called the Everything Update (Again), from what we can tell. You're probably still getting used to everything that's recently been added at the end of 2020 in 1.5, but ConcernedApe has hinted that there will still be more Stardew-related announcements coming in 2021.

We've catalogued each patch and update to the game and have divided them into a handy bar at the top. There have been so many that we've also had to create a second page of the farming sim's previous updates. If you're looking to make even more changes to your farm, make sure you check our list of the best Stardew Valley mods. It's also one of the best laptop games that you can play on low-spec machines.

December 21, 2020

As ever, Stardew Valley developer ConcernedApe has made an announcement for update 1.5 with a high-level look at some of the new additions for you to dig up on your farms. If you want the full (spoiler-filled) change log, scroll on down to the next header to see the line-by-line changes.

Here's what's new and noteworthy, without spoilers, according to the developer.

New Beach Farm

There is a new farm called “Beach Farm“. It’s big, with good fishing and foraging opportunities, and the chance for rare supply crate to wash up on shore. But there’s a catch… the majority of the farm is covered in sandy soil that prevents you from using sprinklers (they get clogged with the sand). If this is your first time playing Stardew Valley, I recommend trying one of the other farms for a more classic experience, but if you’re coming back for another playthrough, Beach Farm might make your experience a little more fresh (it also has a unique look).\

Advanced Game Options

There is a new “Advanced Game Options” button in the bottom left of the character creation menu. From here, you can select a variety of options to customize your playthrough. For returning players, I’d recommend trying out the “remixed” Community Center bundles, which randomizes the bundles you’ll get, adding in brand new ones as well as variations of the originals. Remixing the mine rewards can also shake things up… this adds randomized variety to what you can get out of the mine chests.

Local split-screen co-op

To play split-screen, build a cabin (from Robin’s) for up to 3 other players who will be joining (if you’re starting a new game, you can also select to have cabins already placed at the beginning in the advanced game options menu). Once the cabins are there, open your game menu, scroll down to multiplayer, and select “Start local co-op”. The other players can now join by pressing start on a controller connected to the PC. Please see the options tab in the game menu to adjust the zoom level and UI zoom level to a setting that works well for you. Otherwise, split screen works exactly the same as online multiplayer.

Spoiler-free new features list:

Patch 1.4.1

December 2, 2019

ConcernedApe released the 1.4.1 patch to address issues found in the big 1.4 Everything Update. The patch was originally listed as version "1.4.0.1" but changed to 1.4.1 to keep compatibility with the Stardew Valley Modding API.

Here are the fixes and changes from the patch notes.

New features

  • Added a new Gamepad Mode selection to the options menu. The default setting (“Auto”) will automatically switch between keyboard and mouse controls depending on the last used input. “Force on” forces the game to use gamepad logic, similar to earlier versions of Stardew Valley. “Force off” disables the gamepad and should be used if you only play the game using a keyboard and mouse.

  • Some non-spouse NPC’s now have custom movie ticket acceptance dialogue (english only)

  • Explosive ammo now costs 300g/each in Marolon’s shop, won’t appear until you’ve unlocked the crafting recipe, and now only explodes with a 2 tile radius instead of 3.
  •  You can now only buy one piece of Magic Rock Candy per Thursday at the Desert Trader.
  • Iridium ore abundance now increases much more slowly beyond level 100 of the skull cavern
  • Vincent now loves snails

Bug fixes

  •  Fixed the incorrect ordering of NPC gift tastes so now tastes should remain as they were in 1.3.
  •  Trash bear no longer appears on festival days, preventing a potential crash.
  •  Fixed an issue where reclaiming the Insect Head, Neptune’s Glaive, Forest Sword, or Carving Knife from Marlon would cause Clint to appear t
