Street Fighter 6 somehow patched its incest storyline to make it even shadier than it originally was
If you'd asked me to guess which hill Capcom would choose to die on when it comes to Street Fighter 6, 'one where there's random incest' would not have even been in my top 10 guesses.
Yet here we are, a month out from the addition of DLC fighter Alex—long-time series staple, first-time incester—who, for whatever reason in this game, marries his second-cousin-slash-adoptive-sister and impregnates her. Sure, his status as a New Yorker makes marrying your second cousin legally fine, but I also wouldn't want to be known as the guy shacking up with anyone who is even a little blood related to me.
When players began asking the incredibly reasonable question of "Hey, Capcom, what the hell?" Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama basically came out and said… sorry if you're confused by the story. But a promise was still made to "revise certain text passages that may have been misleading," which is what happened in a patch last week.
The problem? Alex has now gone from being openly, brazenly incestuous to still being incestuous, but incredibly shady about it.
They changed Alex's World Tour dialog in SF6 (after and before): from r/Fighters
The original passage in the World Tour story—which refers to his wife Patricia's father, Tom—reads: "He's a cousin of my mom and was a sparring buddy of my dad."
The passage now? "He's a distant relative of my mom or something, and was a sparring buddy of my dad."
Or something. Or something! Making it more cloak-and-dagger makes it feel so strangely dodgy, almost like he knows it's wrong and is trying to skirt the specifics. But I certainly won't: Alex is still married to someone he is blood related to and has knocked them up—nevermind the illustration that shows him holding Patricia when she is literally a baby. If I think about any of this too hard my head will explode… or something.
I have no idea why Capcom is so staunchly against making Patricia and Alex's relationship not weird. Neighbours, guys! Childhood friends! I can't believe I have to write this, but I am pretty sure there are at least half a dozen ways you can create a close relationship between two people without making them related.
So yeah. Alex now has an entry on his Street Fighter wiki page that reads: "Alex is the only known character to be married and have produced a child with a blood relative, Patricia." So way to go on that one, Capcom.
